“My nieces/nephew and sister use it all the time when they come over and my dad enjoys just sitting outside his camper, listening to his music and rocking the day away.” Fayetteville barely made it under our population cap of 100,000, but this southern mountain town is a great ozark trail chair sleeper destination for cyclists. Hundreds of miles of rural paved roads extend into the surrounding Siskiyou Range. Mountain bikers enjoy the 100-mile trail system in the 15,000-acre Ashland Watershed, where singletrack ascends to the top of 7,532-foot Mount Ashland and runs all the way back into town, more than 5,000 feet below. Ashland Mountain Adventures runs shuttles ($30 per person), so you can skip the climb up Mount Ashland and focus on the descent during your 13- to 25-mile (depending on the route) ride. Aspen-Snowmass and the Roaring Fork Valley was the first destination in Colorado to earn Gold Level Ride Center status from the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA).
Trailheads for popular singletrack begin right on the edge of neighborhood streets, and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s extensive lift-served routes are 15 minutes from the town center. Biking is woven into the fabric of the community, through the extensive infrastructure and events like bike swaps, youth programs, and local race series. In June, a landslide closed a 10-mile stretch of the Teton Pass mountain road for three weeks, impeding the commute between Jackson and less expensive communities in Idaho.
This wider and longer set will provide support for larger adults with the same upright style as the traditional bagged camping chair. Has been rated for 300 pounds, but can hold more weight comfortably. Double cup holders are also extra large to hold bigger drinks. Most of our testers found the REI Co-op Skyward Chair to be one of the least comfortable chairs in our testing pool.
There’s also a mesh pocket behind the backrest, to hold things you don’t need to access quickly. This chair comes with a sturdy carrying case, with an over-the-shoulder strap, and it’s simple to expand and fold up accordion-style. Testers with knee and hip issues reported that when they were getting in and out of this chair, its armrests felt more stable than those of any other model. So they felt comfortable leaning onto the frame for extra support. No other chair in our testing pool—except perhaps the extremely pricey Yeti Trailhead—came close to matching the King Kong’s build quality.
Most commonly utilized as a camping chair, these lightweight, foldable chairs are only a few pounds and can be easily carried over the shoulder, but not all folding chairs are created equal. While some have just the basics and serve their purpose as an outdoor chair, others have cup holders, footrests and lumbar support to keep you extra comfy. Other chairs we tested sacrificed too much comfort in order to shave mere ounces off of their weights, and we don’t think the trade-off was worth it. Keep in mind that lightweight chairs won’t be nearly as comfortable as traditional camping chairs, so take the word comfortable with a grain of salt.

Start your journey at the Rock Creek Bridge that was put in place in 1921, became part of Route 66 in 1926 and was bypassed in 1952. This Sapulpa bridge is one of the state’s best remaining examples of the steel-truss architecture that was popular in the pre-World War II era. With a patchwork of red bricks and concrete, you can truly feel the age of this narrow bridge, which is closed to vehicles but open to foot traffic. Helping build, maintain, or promote the Ozark Trail is a rewarding experience, and numerous opportunities are available to volunteers. During a camping trip, I sat in a friend’s REI Flexlite Camp Boss, which is a larger version of REI’s Flexlite line of chairs that we mention in the competition. It was surprisingly comfortable and more stable than the Flexlite and Flexlite Air that we tested. We look forward to having a testing panel compare it to our top lightweight pick.
The next part of your journey takes you off Route 66 to the small town of Langston, which is located midway between Guthrie and Stillwater. The city’s most notable attraction is Langston University, the only historically Black college in Oklahoma, which was established in 1897. Travelers to this obelisk can find it the intersection of Indian Meridian Road and Washington Avenue, surrounded by red dirt and gravel roads. Sometimes referred to as the Indian Meridian Monument for its location at the division of Oklahoma and Indian Territories, this obelisk was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. It has received a fresh white coating of paint and displays directional arrows to Coyle, Perkins, Meridian and Guthrie.
Fortunately, this is also easy to remedy via a bit of DIY engineering. Simply buy a mesh bag for storage, attach a D-Ring to it, and clamp it onto one of the chair’s support struts. In terms of extras, the Ozark Trail XXL Director camping chair comes with a fold-out side table attached to one of the chair arms. The table is big enough to hold a small plate, which makes camp dining convenient, and is big ozark trail chair enough to hold a few miscellaneous supplies if and as needed.
