He opened Waterford Precision Cycles and briefly renewed production of the highly-prized Schwinn Paramount road racing bikes built there. Waterford Precision would continue to hand build a couple of thousand custom, steel frame bikes a year under the Waterford and Gunnar brands, as well as for other small bike companies. Schwinn followed the Scrambler line with the Predator in 1982,[38] their next step into the competitive modern BMX market. The Predator took just eight percent of the BMX market. Schwinn had a very successful BMX factory supported racing team (beginning in 1976) made up of some of the best riders of the day. They were even used for an episode of the TV show CHiPs.

The company’s first true mountain bike (the Sidewinder) was made in 1982. In 1995, in a secret effort called “Project Underground,” Schwinn developed a line of high-tech mountain bikes that featured an innovative suspension system and an isolated drivetrain. As a result, Schwinns became increasingly dated in both styling and technology. A year later I sold the mountain bike and then tried a hybrid. Dang, the cycling industry really had a thing for splatter paint around 1990. That got me onto skinnier 700c wheels and I was able to go faster. I soon found a road bike that really got me excited (no splatter – 3 color fade instead) and I began to ride almost every day. I was hooked and I soon found myself wearing tight Lycra clothing and hideous Oakley sunglasses. Featuring front suspension, 21 speeds, and all-terrain tires, these bikes are built for grand adventures.

Aside from some new frame lug designs, the designs, methods and tooling were the same as had been used in the 1930s. The Paramount continued as a limited production model, built in small numbers in a small apportioned area of the old Chicago assembly factory. The new frame and component technology incorporated in the Paramount largely failed to reach Schwinn’s mass-market bicycle lines. W. Schwinn, grandson Frank Valentine Schwinn took over management of the company.
